Timing Your Pre Employment Check
Most employers send fingerprinting instructions after an offer, so getting printed too early can mean the results are sent to the wrong place or considered outdated. Wait until you know which checks are needed and where results should go, then book promptly.
Waiting too long can delay your start date, since many regulated positions cannot begin until BCI and, if required, FBI results arrive. Ask the employer whether it pays for the check or reimburses you. Keep your receipt and share it with human resources so they can follow up if results take longer than expected.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
- A valid, unexpired government photo ID such as a driver license, state ID or passport
- The reason code or Ohio Revised Code section from the employer or licensing board requesting your check
- The mailing address or email where results should be sent
- Any FD-258 cards supplied by an out of state agency, left unsigned until you are with the technician
- Payment in a form the provider accepts
Which Check Do You Need?
BCI only searches Ohio records and is common for many state licenses and volunteer roles. FBI only searches national records. BCI and FBI is required for many teaching, health care, child care and professional licenses, especially if you have lived outside Ohio in the past five years. If you are unsure, ask the agency requesting your prints before booking.
How Long Results Take
Most WebCheck results reach the employer or applicant within one to four weeks. Poor print quality or a common name can add time. For delays, contact the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (877) 224-0043.
