Fingerprinting Use Cases

People need fingerprints for many different reasons, and each reason can call for a different type of check. Use this guide to see which situation fits yours, then search the directory for a provider near you.

Employment Background Checks

Schools, hospitals, home care agencies, child care centers, financial firms and many government employers require fingerprint based background checks before hire. Your employer will tell you which state or federal check to request and where the results should go.

Professional Licensing

Nurses, teachers, counselors, real estate agents, security officers, private investigators and many other licensed professionals are fingerprinted when they apply for or renew a license. Follow the instructions from your licensing board so the results reach the board directly.

Volunteers and Youth Programs

Coaches, chaperones, mentors and other volunteers who work with children or vulnerable adults are often asked for a background check. The organization usually explains which check is needed and may cover the cost.

Adoption and Foster Care

Prospective adoptive and foster parents, and often other adults in the home, are fingerprinted as part of the home study. Your caseworker will provide the codes and instructions.

Firearms Permits

Many states require fingerprints for concealed carry permits and certain firearms transfers. These are often handled by a sheriff’s office or a designated provider, so check your state’s requirements first.

Immigration and Travel

Some immigration, visa and foreign residency processes ask for an FBI identity history summary or FD-258 fingerprint cards. Confirm the exact format with the agency or consulate before your appointment.

Personal Record Review

You can request your own FBI identity history summary to review your record, correct an error or meet a requirement abroad. Many providers can capture prints for this purpose.

Group and Employer Programs

Businesses, schools and organizations that print several people at once can ask providers about group appointments or mobile service at their location.

Find a fingerprinting provider or ask a question if you are unsure which check you need.
