Fingerprinting for Credentialing
Credentialing covers more than a basic license. Hospitals, insurers, schools and certification programs may require background checks before granting privileges or certifications. Each organization typically sets the checks it needs and where results should be sent.
If several organizations are credentialing you at the same time, ask each whether it requires its own submission or will accept results sent elsewhere. Keep a simple log with dates, receipt numbers and the recipient for each check. That record helps when a credentialing office asks for proof or when you need to renew later.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
- A valid, unexpired government photo ID such as a driver license, state ID or passport
- The reason code or Ohio Revised Code section from the employer or licensing board requesting your check
- The mailing address or email where results should be sent
- Any FD-258 cards supplied by an out of state agency, left unsigned until you are with the technician
- Payment in a form the provider accepts
Which Check Do You Need?
BCI only searches Ohio records and is common for many state licenses and volunteer roles. FBI only searches national records. BCI and FBI is required for many teaching, health care, child care and professional licenses, especially if you have lived outside Ohio in the past five years. If you are unsure, ask the agency requesting your prints before booking.
How Long Results Take
Most WebCheck results reach the employer or applicant within one to four weeks. Poor print quality or a common name can add time. For delays, contact the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (877) 224-0043.
