Fingerprinting for Regulated Hiring
Regulated employers, such as those in healthcare, finance, education, pharmaceuticals and security, are often required by law or contract to screen employees with fingerprint based checks. These checks go beyond name based searches because prints link records to a specific person.
Your employer should identify the checks, the reason code and where results must go. Some employers schedule appointments or pay directly. Be ready for additional screening such as drug tests or credential verification. Respond quickly to requests from human resources, since delays on your end can slow onboarding for the whole team.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
- A valid, unexpired government photo ID such as a driver license, state ID or passport
- The reason code or Ohio Revised Code section from the employer or licensing board requesting your check
- The mailing address or email where results should be sent
- Any FD-258 cards supplied by an out of state agency, left unsigned until you are with the technician
- Payment in a form the provider accepts
Which Check Do You Need?
BCI only searches Ohio records and is common for many state licenses and volunteer roles. FBI only searches national records. BCI and FBI is required for many teaching, health care, child care and professional licenses, especially if you have lived outside Ohio in the past five years. If you are unsure, ask the agency requesting your prints before booking.
How Long Results Take
Most WebCheck results reach the employer or applicant within one to four weeks. Poor print quality or a common name can add time. For delays, contact the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (877) 224-0043.
