What Employers Typically Ask For

Employers in fields such as healthcare, child care, education, transportation and finance are often required to run fingerprint based checks. Others choose to for positions involving security, money handling or vulnerable people. The employer decides which checks to request and where results should go.

Your instructions may include a reason code, a results address or an ORI number. Some employers also ask for a signed consent form or disclosure. Follow the instructions exactly and ask human resources if anything is unclear. If you have lived outside Ohio in recent years, an FBI check is commonly part of the request.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

• A valid, unexpired government photo ID such as a driver license, state ID or passport
• The reason code or Ohio Revised Code section from the employer or licensing board requesting your check
• The mailing address or email where results should be sent
• Any FD-258 cards supplied by an out of state agency, left unsigned until you are with the technician
• Payment in a form the provider accepts

Which Check Do You Need?

BCI only searches Ohio records and is common for many state licenses and volunteer roles. FBI only searches national records. BCI and FBI is required for many teaching, health care, child care and professional licenses, especially if you have lived outside Ohio in the past five years. If you are unsure, ask the agency requesting your prints before booking.

How Long Results Take

Most WebCheck results reach the employer or applicant within one to four weeks. Poor print quality or a common name can add time. For delays, contact the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (877) 224-0043.
